Newman’s Own wine

Paul Newman is a man of many hats. Ranch dressing (the cowboy hat), salsa (the sombrero), Caesar dressing (the crown of olive branches)… And now wine! (A derby for the cabernet and a top hat for the chardonnay, his only two varieties.) I was excited to discover it on sale at World Market for $10, though its suggested retail is $16. It’s bottled by Three Thieves, known for “unsnobbing” wine — great quality at a low cost. I give the cab two out of three hats for taste, and three out of three for principle: As with all Newman’s Own goods, 100 percent of after-tax profits are donated by Paul and the Newman’s Own Foundation to charity, with more than $200 million donated so far.
