Cursive Design: Modern-day craftswoman

Flipping through an old journal from my mid-teens a few years ago, I found a one-liner that I haven’t been able to forget since:

“Save the shoe repairmen.”

I love the concept of the lone craftsman working away in a dusty shop at his ages-old trade. (Just call me a romantic.) With planned obsolescence designed into way too many products today, including (maybe lead by?) cheap trendy clothes and accessories, Cursive Design in Chicago is a delicious breath of fresh air. Crafting multi-media necklaces and earrings designed and handmade to spec by Sarah Fox, shoppers select their design, choose between gold or silver and then choose between seven lace colors. If Sarah doesn’t have your specifications already in stock, she makes them up by hand, always shipping within a week. Except right now: In true craftswoman form, she has put a “note on the door” that she’ll be on holiday until the 22nd. Standing by, gov’ner.
