Handmade Holiday: Letterpress, Knitting and Leatha

We started our communal handmakery last week. (Finally got my pictures uploaded.) This is going to be HOT!

Our letterpressed gift tags are going to be a big hit.

I can’t knit, but Jen is knitting a neck warmer for me to give to someone on my list!

This old leatha skirt finally goes to good use. I’m making luggage tags! I think I’ll personalize them with embroidery. (You can see where we tried to letterpress the leatha. It won’t work, but nice thought.)

Now, I have to give my motivational speech on all this DIY stuff. Obviously, not everyone out there is wildly artistically talented. I don’t necessarily consider myself an “artist” — but I am “determined”! That’s all that matters.

I can follow instructions, and I pretty much excel at “borrowing” other people’s good ideas. (I’ve scoured many a page of Fred Flare, Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie and others for inspiration.) I chose a few projects I could definitely manage, and I’m making them work. I’m personalizing as many gifts as I can, to make the handmade element really worthwhile.

I’m not a fan of a “crafy” look, so I’m trying to “color in the lines” as much as possible. (Hopefully that part of my Type-A personality won’t get the best of me…)

My patterns and motifs may not be original, and my stitches may not be uniform. But every piece will be made with love!
