Organic Jeans to Hit Wal-Mart and Kmart
Watch out, world — Faded Glory and Route 66 are going organic!
Earlier this month, GreenBiz.com reported that Wal-Mart and Kmart will add full lines of organic jeans to their private labels. These will not be glamorous jeans, but at this mass level? WOW.
The jeans will be made by Greensource, which is the best part of the story. Greensource-made garments come with a tracking number, which buyers can type in at greensource.com to track the jeans’ life cycle — where the cotton was grown, where the cotton was spun and where the jeans were manufactured.
The Greensource website itself doesn’t have much to say (wish it said more!), but I found one of said tracking numbers on a forum and was impressed by the results. For that particular garment — a pair of black jeans purchased from Target last summer — the cotton was grown organically in India, milled in Pakistan, and the jeans were manufactured in Pakistan according to Worldwide Responsible Apparel Production (WRAP) standards.
To check this example out yourself, visit Greensource and enter Product Traceability code GSOW0032 in the upper right-hand corner. (Detailed information on fields, mills and plants are available by clicking the certification logos on each page — it’s not the most user-friendly layout ever.)
I haven’t found any concrete timing on when the full lines of organic jeans will be available, but they’re obviously popping up already. (I’ve also heard mention of the Greensource jeans at Kohl’s.) If anyone has seen or purchased them, please share!
White organic jeans above by Faded Glory, on clearance now for $15.
